OUR HISTORY

Located in the heart of Hollywood, Sunset Sound is more than just a recording studio. It's a legendary cornerstone of the music industry. Founded in 1960 by Disney recording director Salvador “Tutti” Camarata, Sunset Sound was born from a vision: to build a studio that combined world-class acoustics with a uniquely creative atmosphere.

When Walt Disney declined the idea of owning a dedicated recording studio, Tutti took it as a sign to launch his own. He discovered a former auto repair shop on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Its angled walls, ceilings, and floors made it a hidden acoustic gem. That space became Sunset Sound Recorders, now one of the most iconic recording studios in Los Angeles.

In its early years, Sunset Sound served as Disney’s go-to studio, capturing classic film scores like Mary Poppins, Bambi, and 101 Dalmatians. As the music landscape evolved, Sunset Sound did too. Transforming by the mid '60s into a creative haven for rock and pop artists. 

Over the decades, the studio expanded from a single room into a state-of-the-art recording complex in Hollywood, featuring three fully equipped studios. Known for its unmatched sound quality, custom vintage equipment, technical support and a private atmosphere, Sunset Sound quickly became the recording home of countless Grammy-winning artists and chart-topping albums.

In 1981, the legacy grew with the acquisition of The Sound Factory, another historic Los Angeles recording studio. Originally established in the late '60s by RCA and Warner/Reprise engineer David Hassinger, The Sound Factory, located on Selma Avenue in Hollywood, attracted major artists like Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and The Jackson 5. The Sound Factory was sold in 2017 and is no longer affiliated with Sunset Sound.

When the studio briefly closed in the early '80s, Paul Camarata, Tutti’s son and current president of Sunset Sound, saw an opportunity. He renovated and revitalized the space, offering a cost-effective yet high-quality alternative for producers in need of professional-grade recording options in LA.

Today, Sunset Sound continues to set the gold standard in music recording. Still family-owned and operated, the studios remain a cornerstone of music history.
